“ Blues for the 21st Century… “

De Brit Ged Wilson begon als muzikant in de jaren zeventig als zanger in de band Spike. Met hen nam hij toen een LP op. Dit werd voor Wilson het begin van zijn carrière als singer-songwriter, gitarist en harmonicaspeler.

In de jaren tachtig, met de opkomst van synthesizers en drummachines, experimenteerde Wilson en leerde hij sax en mondharmonica spelen. Hij nam in Salford enkele demo’s op, een goede basis voor zijn toekomstige carrière. Begin jaren negentig vormde Ged zijn band, Blues at Ten. Het was een vierkoppige bluesband met Ged als zanger, op gitaar en mondharmonica. De band speelde veel in het noorden van Engeland.

Daarna leidde Wilson een nieuwe band, No Money Down. De band speelde op grote blues festivals en trok naar Chicago om te jammen en, om uit eerste hand te observeren, wat daar in de blues clubs zoal gebeurde. Opnieuw na vier jaar touren, stopte de band. Vanaf 2011 besloot Ged het alleen te doen.

Zijn derde studioalbum ‘Tonight at Noon’ uit 2017 had een promo-track "Ain't That a Shame" die te horen was in de Paul Jones Blues Show op BBC Radio 2. Ged's vorige studioalbum ‘What's Going On?’ [2016] werd vermeld in de top 100 albums wereldwijd voor het jaar 2013.

Op zijn nieuwe album ‘Anthology’ verzamelt Ged Wilson twaalf favoriete nummers uit het voorbije decennium, de beste en meest populaire nummers van zijn drie vorige albums. 'Anthology', beginnend met de tracks op de A-kant, start met zes eenvoudige solotracks. Als hoogtepunten wil ik hier de opener “Ain’t That a Shame”, het bluesy, maar onvoorspelbare en wat jazzy  “Bullet for the Blues” en het subtiele “What the Blindman Saw”. Op de B-kant staan opnames met band. Ook voor hen die Wilson kennen mag je spreken over nieuwe “ontdekkingen”. Hier zijn de uitspringers “Spin the Coin”, het donkere “Evil (Is in Your Soul)”, “Down the Line” o.w.v. de groove en de swingende afsluiter “Kinda Blue”.

Ged Wilson’s nieuwe album ‘Anthology’ vat zijn kwaliteiten als singer-songwriter en muzikant knap samen. Zijn nummers zitten boordevol positieve vibes, humor in zijn vaak luchtige teksten. Wilson's muzikaliteit is top op gitaren en mondharmonica.
